And Dion, any particular uses for the patu?

Patu… fairly straight forward. Similar in shape to the taiaha itself; it does have an ate, it does have a rau. However, the difference being is the reke. The reke was quite impressive, it’s the butt end (that you see here) to the patu rākau; was used for defence as well as for attack during battle. You are most probably quite familiar with the taura or the tauri, basically is the added thong to ensure that you didn’t drop your rākau like so. So if I dropped it from the hand I knew that I could always come back and sort of come back to sort of a fighting position. It’s been years since I’ve used the patu…and during wero…but this is my preference…. A big guy, I don’t need a big taiaha, I just need something simple like this, ‘cause you can move quite quickly with it. So there you have it.

As you notice with a lot of our weaponry is it is based on close contact. Though we did see some of our taonga from within our collection that could be used from a distance, but basically with Māori, they like to get up close and personal and really get into dealing with the enemy.
