Before using the taonga, does one have to have some knowledge of protocols?

Hopefully, before anybody actually picks up any of our taonga weaponry, the first thing you do learn is protocols and tikanga to do with each of those particular taonga. At the same time, as far as I know with the weaponry training, like I said, you don’t get to pick up any of the taonga. The first thing you learn is foot moves, you learn about their tuku mihi hoki ki ngā atua, so giving reverence to the atua who are responsible for these particular weaponry, as well as the knowledge we are about to learn.
