Now this is an entry called Canoe Traditions, and this is all about the story of the different waka, and these are all oral history stories. These are stories which were given birth presumably in the voyages out to New Zealand, and then were told for something like 700 years. And they’ve become tremendously important founding stories for the iwi of the country.
I don’t know if you want to say something about those canoe trips.

Well…most iwi link back to a particular waka, so that you can, as well as having your whakapapa back to a founding ancestor for an iwi, you can also link to a person that was on a particular waka that came over. So Ngāti Kahungunu for instance linked to Tākitimu waka, Ngāti Porou to Horouta, and so on.
