These lines show the route of the currents, and the little shells on top of it show the little islands. And these charts were often used – usually they were carried in people’s heads rather than actually carried on board ship…on board the waka – really to help people by looking very closely at the way in which the sea was moving, they could work out their directions. So the whole voyaging to New Zealand is an amazing story. And it’s pretty clear that it was a quite deliberate process of navigation, it wasn’t an accidental thing. And what’s also clear is that they went off against the wind, because what they began to realise was that if they went down wind, they might have danger….you know danger of getting lost, not being able to get back home. So they usually sail against the wind with the realisation that if things got dicey they could come back with the wind. So it was an amazing feat.

Basil

They come back a lot faster as well.

Jock
