This is about…this shows for example the outrigger canoes which were a sort of a major invention really, because once you had an outrigger, it meant that you could go a long distance, because the canoe was so much more stable, than it was when it was simply a dug out canoe.

A lot quicker exactly. And here’s a canoe in… Fiji. As you can see its got two hulls, an outrigger hull makes it a lot more stable, and as Basil says, much quicker. Another canoe this one from…I think this is probably from the Solomon Islands. Now what’s interesting is that some of the modern yachties, this is Grant Dalton, basically have modelled their really fast catamarans on Polynesian canoes. I mean these were some of the great inventors, great navigators that the world has ever seen. And it’s interesting that even in the 21st century someone like Grant Dalton is still going back to those techniques.
