Richard and Gino discuss Gollum

Richard:
If you remember in the Two Towers when Frodo falls into the pool in the Dead Marshes and what he sees are these emanations and here you can see a very simple silicone mask. So this is same silicone that you squirt out of caulking guns around windows when you are trying to seal them up, you can see inside there.

Over here we've brought in a little silicone Gollum that ah Gino may, ah… So you can see it's very, very squishy. And he's got great ability to squish up his face.

Gino:
You want to go back to Middle Earth?

Gollum:
No, no

Gino:
Do you like Sam?

Gollum:

Do you Frodo?

Gollum:

So, this is actually one of the paint designs, the maquettes that I painted up to show Peter Jackson, to show him my ideas of what I thought his skin would look like. Very pale looking with a lot of veins, you can see a lot of the veins back here.

And also, ah, Peter's idea to have different rashes and stuff on his head so, ah, he's got this eczema, so he's constantly itching himself and that kind of thing.
