Sarah:
What do you think would be more appropriate out of a fine arts degree or a design degree, um, for someone who wants to do what you do?
Richard:
I have no doubt in my mind and I'll speak my mind: I believe that you should go after a polytech degree if you want to pursue a career in the commercial arts. (If you… I always describe it,)
If you have a desire to look inside yourself for inspiration, if you have these inner inspirations then pursue fine art, because in doing so you'll be able to deliver your own inspirations through your sculpture, your painting, or whatever medium, for the world to enjoy.
But if you have a desire to service other peoples' needs with your craft, with your art, then pursue a career through polytech. Go to design school because there you'll be taught the practical skills of becoming a commercial artist, of going out onto the world stage and selling your craft for a fee that is worthy of earning and ultimately make a productive and rich career of the work that you've learnt.
And obviously both avenues have great benefits but they both, they don't both as easily come to the end point of a career like the one we have. I'm very, very thankful I went through polytech as opposed to fine arts school.
