What kind of light should I use for shooting a scene at night-time?
Richard:
OK, it's all about what mood you want. If you want a creepy Blair Witch Project mood, they shot their scene with torchlight, so that you have that glow from underneath the face that gives that really creepy haunted feeling.
But if you want the feel of obviously a huge rugby stadium-like lighting then you want lots and lots of light.
But I imagine what you're after is a more intimate lighted scene. So ah something like, if you want someone running out of the bushes across the top of a hill, go and park a car over the hill with its headlights on full, it'll create this great glow, creepy glow, out from behind the bushes and then even angle-poise lamps are great, for then modelling the foreground scene and getting the light levels up to capture what you want.
But obviously if you have a professional lighting pack with a couple of good lights then that will assist but use bounced light a little bit as well so you're bouncing off a piece of reflective material like cardboard.
