Student:
What about making the illusion of a spirit leaving its keeper?

Richard:
OK, if I was trying to do that inexpensively, I would do something like… ah… get… ah, you know when you, if anyone's got beehives on their farm, you have the smokers that you smoke the inside of the beehives to make the bees go to sleep so you can get the honey out, we use those smokers for creating wispy smoke.

Maybe you could shoot multiple elements blowing air into the smoke so they create these very unusual dancing elements of, ah, mystical smoke. Shoot those against black and if the white smoke is shot against black, then you can remove them digitally as a separate element very, very easily so that as your elder or your character is going through this transformation and the spirit is leaving, you can have this beautiful wispy smoke.

If you want them to actually have character, then it's an animation process. What about something like getting a sheet of glass, sprinkling sand onto it - the sand off a beach - and with your finger actually animating the shape of the spirits leaving. Put the camera underneath the piece of glass and you will film what your fingers are doing in the glass, then transfer that as an extra element onto your background plate.
