You might be able to preserve some polar bears in the zoo, and there are animals of course already on the planet now that exist pretty much only in zoo environments, and of course you can cool the conditions there, you can give them certain food to feed off, you can probably find something. But if someone said to you, you know hey, you know we’ve got the rest of your life sorted out, we can put you in a glass case, and we will feed you regularly, and we might even give you a TV to watch, are you really going to say that counts as a proper life? I mean I think if you are talking about actually preserving a species, you want to preserve a species in its habitat, and its habitat, the entire polar regions is what we are destroying. So you are right to say you might be able to, and who knows, we may have the genetic technology in another 50 years to be able to bring back polar bears after we have killed them off.
But the important thing here isn’t actually the polar bears it’s to actually make the connection that if we are messing up this environment that is thousands of miles away from where most people live, just think about what we are doing to everything else. This stuff, it’s not like all of this stuff is just affecting the polar bears, it’s just that they are the early warning system. What we are doing to them we are doing to ourselves, we are messing up our own streets, our cities, our own food chain, so just use this as a warning system, you know you don’t want it to be…
There are serious New Zealand scientists, I can think of one, he is a major Antarctic explorer who is predicting that the human species has about 100 years left, now I think that is pessimistic, but the fact that genuine serious scientists, are now talking about the fact that we are making the planet uninhabitable for ourselves, you ought to hear a little warning bell going off, saying maybe there are things that we should be doing here.
