Every year that it passes it gets to be more of a problem, and that still doesn’t mean that any action that is positive can decrease the effects you know, you could put your foot on the brake and you may not stop the car crashing, but you can make the crash less likely to be fatal.

I’m sorry to have a graphic, you know, metaphor here, but we may not be able to stop things going badly. But we can slow it down a bit, and that is what I think our first goal has to be. And it is one of those things that it might seem ridiculous to start with, but the more effort that goes into it, the more this seems to be a normal part of the conversation, the faster things will begin to change.

You know we have seen success. I mean most of you in the audience have grown up with unleaded petrol as the normal petrol. In a space of ten years we went from realising that the lead in petrol was very dangerously poisonous, to coming up with an alternative, to having that alternative become the norm. If your car now runs on leaded petrol that’s now pretty unusual. So it is possible.
