Another saying I know is that every generation re-invents Shakespeare and we are doing that as well. You’ve only got to see the Romeo + Juliet the movie, or Richard III, where things are being reinterpreted. The only reason to put another period setting upon Shakespeare is to bring something out of the text with it. Just dressing people in modern clothes is nonsense. It doesn’t mean anything. You might as well put them in tights and doublet and hose. I don’t buy that that is going to make Shakespeare better, because frankly seeing men walking around in tights and doublet and hose is kind of like I think a joke. So I don’t buy the purists who say ‘You must do it traditionally’. I think that is nonsense.
