Biggest thing about Othello, the play is called ‘Othello’, it’s not called ‘Iago’. Got it? It’s not called ‘Iago’. Iago is not the main role. I think it’s really important to keep that in your head, because otherwise the thing becomes unbalanced in my opinion.

Desdemona is a fabulous character, she is one of the strongest characters I think in Shakespeare, and quite often people play her as more of a victim than that. She isn’t. She is great and the fact that she fights back with him when he is trying to kill her is amazing, “Kill me tomorrow, let me live tonight”. I find that scene….that scene has to be done with her being very very feisty in my opinion.

Also, what else can I tell you about that play that I love? The parallel lines of the way Iago manipulates Rodrigo, I find that one of the most cruel awful things in Shakespeare, and terribly sad in my opinion, cause he is such a pathetic character Rodrigo, and Iago just chews him up, spits him out and kills him. And reputation is huge. You know Casio talks about reputation, “I’ve lost my reputation”. That’s what’s Iago’s problem.
