This skins on my timpani are synthetic, they are made out of nylon, but they are made to mimic the qualities of calf skin, which is what timpani used to be covered with all the time. Same on tambourines and drum kits and snare drums, you can buy synthetic heads, plastic heads for them, but it can be a matter of personal taste. Some people feel that natural living materials like goat, calf, even kangaroo skin has a slightly different and preferable quality to it. So both are available for all the instruments, it’s just a personal preference.
