Well for me that’s a matter of not starting too soon and planning the story fairly carefully first. Because there is a whole lot of material in your head, and you really have to be selective and work out what goes with the story. If I start writing too soon, I can get that extraneous material in, but I really try to plan it before I sit down and write.

Yeah, you’re a lot more disciplined than me. I usually just sit down and write everything and have a very long and prolonged editing process where I kind of weed out all the other stuff and often I find that I’ve actually got two or three stories that I’ve written kind of all jumbled together, and I just try and get everything down first, and then kind of compress it during the editing process, but I think that you have to find a way that works for you.

Yes the more you write the more you develop your own technique.
