How do you know what to cut out of your story?

How do you do that Vita?

Vita

Once you’ve done a lot of it, you’ll know which bits aren’t working. Also give the story to your friends to read, and to your parents, and to your teachers and to anyone who you can convince into reading your story. Like input from other people is really important as well and they’ll be able to tell you from a kind of outsiders perspective what stuff is good and what stuff is not.

What Vita said about having several stories in one sometimes, describes what we all do occasionally, I try to think of one sentence which the story is about and that’s my base line and I keep to that, that’s the spinal chord of the story, and the limbs have to hang on that. If something is not directly connected to that I cut it out. You might find that helpful in editing.
