Did you always know you wanted to be a journalist?
Lynn

This is a terrible thing to say when there are teachers in the room, but I wanted to be a teacher as my parents wanted me to be a teacher, and we were so awful to our teachers in 3rd or 4th form that I decided that was not the career for me. I loved English and I thought, “Well what else can I do? I’ll be a journalist!” So from 13 was the time I decided to be a journalist, nothing too scientific, already understanding what it was about and I’m so glad that I did, because it’s been the most fun as a career. I still learn something every day and it still engages me, and radio is the right medium for me. I mean Julie’s great because she can work across media, and I’ve done some TV work, but quite honestly for me, radio is the media that I love. If you’re interested in journalism you’ll probably find that there’s one that suits you best. If you love to write, then really you need to go into print. If you love to talk as I do, radio’s a really nice way to go, if you like to interview people and get information from them that way. But you’ve got such a wonderfully diverse career Julie. You’ve gone the other direction to me.

Julie

Yeah, I think the main thing is being nosy. If you’re a really nosy person this is the perfect career for you. You can find out everything you want to know about people. And it’s really fun.
