How do you write a good headline?
Julie

I used to be a sub-editor for a while and those are the people that generally choose the headlines. I think just scan through the article and find a phrase or something like that that really brings to life, what the article is about, try. What I personally hate, is sort of puns and things like that in headlines. So I would avoid those at all costs. Something that sort of is really the essence of the subject and whether you can find that within the actual text or whether you can make that up yourself just be creative I guess.

I like what you were saying about taking little quotes. The Sunday Star Times does that well. This article, Julie, that you brought in about the singer, this guy Potts, “When I sing I become who I really am”. It freezed me. Just that little quote within the body of the text, and I would read that and want to know more about it.

Having said that, there is a pun in the title that says Potts of Gold and the guy’s name is Paul Potts so people still do use puns and sometimes they're not too bad.
