Question
So how far is nuclear fusion away for us?
Dr Jack Bacon

The ITER (International Thermal Nuclear Experimental Reactor) is a co-operation between many nations in Europe, Japan, Canada, China and Russia and they are building their first reactor, it’s in Cadarache France. It was announced just a year ago and the construction site has started, so we are probably… that will be a demonstration reactor, it’s not designed to put much power out on the grid, it’s sort of the break even reactor, so my guess is that they will spend about 10-15 years perfecting that, and it will be another generation before you see fusion on line, probably another generation beyond that before it is taken into space. The principal is basically simple, it’s just been slow steady progress over the last 40 years.
