What caused the potato famine in Ireland?

Jock

Well basically Ireland was a place where there were lots of people having very small pieces of land, and they only really grew one crop, they essentially only grew potatoes. And if you have a single crop like that, if it gets a disease of any kind, if it gets a virus, then it just races through the whole of the farming area. And it was essentially a virus, it was a disease, and it just wiped out the potatoes. What happened was that when they went to dig up the potatoes, they found that all the potatoes were rotten, so they couldn’t eat them, that was their staple crop. And it really came about because they had concentrated too exclusively on one kind of crop.
