What are the other reasons they use it for, other than burning oil and food these days?

Jo McVeaigh

Well the whale meat isn't being used a lot as food. As I said there is around 5000 tonnes of frozen whale meat stock piled in Japan. That is being sold as…..in some supermarket type shops, but largely it is being fed to places like schools and the army where people have less choice and they are less able to say no. It is also being used in pet food, like dog and cat food. A lot of the whale by-products, like the oils and waxes, are replaced with jojoba which is a plant extract and so that is not used today. There actually aren't any reasons that we need whales for whale by-products.
