I am a Pakeha boy from South Auckland, and when I came to Titi, I thought what the hell is going on here?
But it was just magic, you know there were parties on the beach, and friendly people, old ladies who swore the worst swear words I’ve ever heard in my life, and kids that came and pinched all my chocolate biscuits, and cats and dogs that seemed to belong to everybody, and nobody at the same time, and little old houses in the bush that had been there for generations that different families had lived in, but seemed to be alive and had life of their own, and these wonderful landscapes, you know beaches, pohutukawas, small little marae tucked in the corner.
You know Northland was one of my first inspirations really, I still love the place, I feel like a fish out of water anywhere else at the moment. But yeah, I think people….people mainly are the things that interest me, and I’ve ended up writing lots about people, and yeah.
