- What problems have you had when you’re making the television series Frontier of Dreams?

I don’t know actually whether we had any big problems. I mean, there were difficulties to overcome. I know one instance, for example, when we were filming a re-enactment of the First World War – we wanted that to be realistic, it had to look like you were in trenches with mud – what we found was (we were actually filming in Auckland) that we had too much rain and too much mud – now there’s a problem! But that’s a good problem to have; there are worse problems than that.

The big problem in doing a historical series is that when you go back 70 years, and go beyond that, everybody who was there is dead. So you have got to find some way of telling the stories when your main characters…say before the First World War, there’s no one around really who remembers anything, personally from that.
So we had to find all sorts of ways of telling the stories of people who are no longer with us, and we do that by doing some drama, by using lots of photos and paintings of the time, by creating really interesting maps, and video treatment of trenches and all that sort of thing.
But that is the challenge in making history on screen – once you go beyond the period that people remember, you then have to find all sorts of clever ways of telling the story.

Computer graphics is an important part of that, and that’s what you saw, particularly in the first couple of episodes. We used as much computer graphics as we could afford to recreate things like the Haast Eagle for example. No one has seen the Haast Eagle, but what we had to do was reconstruct it using the contemporary CGI graphics – and that’s what you got!
