Tararua College:

Is being a chef, stressful?

Adam:

It’s like anything. You want to be good. If you want to be good at anything, it’s going to be pretty stressful. If you can imagine something simple like frying an egg. It may sound silly, but you can imagine how many things can go wrong. You can break the yolk, the pan is too hot, and you can put too much salt on it. But imagine trying to feed 100 people for lunch. And a 100 people for dinner and imagine not only are you just doing it yourself, but you’re getting a team of maybe 8 or 10 chefs all to come together at once. It’s pretty stressful. But I have to say once you are in that environment; it’s just an amazing feeling. An amazing feeling to be part of a team that are all going in the same direction. And the stress levels, they do disappear. It’s sort of a barrier you go through, I guess.

You touched on it earlier about when you are young, and when you are a student. You know, the hardest part, I think, is you’ve got to work when everyone is going out on a Friday and Saturday night.
