What I have here is a little teddy bear. I made it out of icing which you can buy from the supermarket. There are several different brands but I prefer the Bakells brand, the best. You can get that from Woolworths or a specialty cake store. I just use the Hansells’ colours. I use red and green together to create brown.
So I’ve got a gobstopper size and I’ll roll it around. We have to make sure they are completely round, so there are no seams on them. Come down on the side a little bit, so it’s more like a cone. I’m going to squish it a little bit. That’s going to be his stomach.
I’ve a little bit more here. Again I’m going to roll it into a ball. I’m going to make it into, what I consider to be, a baton and that’s going to sit on top here ... and another little one on the other side. The good thing if you get it wrong you can just eat it.
So you have got two little hands there, like that. So for the feet, I’ll make that a little bit bigger than I did for the hands. What’s easier than finding two balls the same size, is to roll one and make two out of it and I’m going to make this a little bit thicker because this is the foot. I’m going to push it up on the base of the foot and I’m going to put that down here.
Because we never know who’s going to eat these things, what we do is use a bit of vermicelli or spaghetti. Anything you can eat, you could use. I’ll just measure that so that I can make sure it’s going to sit through him (I might break a bit off) So just sit that right through the centre. Then I’m going to make his head.
Then what I’m going to do, with my thumb and index finger, on either side of the head, is pull out some ears. You can do this at home out of white icing. You don’t have to dye it. Or you can make a little pink one or a little blue one.
All I’m doing is just pinching the nose so it looks a little bear-like. I’m just going to put this on top here, like so. That was pretty easy.
Then what I do is use a very fine paint brush. If you do a lot of painting, it is always really good to have a really fine-tipped paint brush. I usually use about a zero or a triple-zero.
Then what I’m going to do. I’m going to have to unfortunately turn it around towards myself.
I’m going to put a little nose on him and then I’m going to put a mouth and some eyes. There we go. And all I’ve done a bit different here is paint the feet. Just a little bit of black around the feet and just the little ears there.
So I’ve used a black food colour, but if you make the teddy bear brown just add a little more red and green together and you’ll get a dark brown and you can paint with that. That’s fine.
