Question:
How many layers of clothes do you wear in Antarctica?
Donald

It depends on two things, the time of year. In mid summer you could wear what you are wearing now, as long as the wind didn’t blow, but that will only last for a couple of weeks. Summer only lasts for about 2 or 3 weeks. And soon as the wind blows, the temperature feels a lot colder, and you start putting these on. Now this example, I bought this mitt along, this is a nose wiper mitt, and the reason it’s got a pad on the back, a soft pad, is because when it’s cold you nose runs all the time and you can’t get your hanky out, and you can’t get tissues, 'cause you’ve got to send them all back to New Zealand and problems like that, so what you do is you wipe your nose on the back of the mitt, and then it freezes. So you just give it a knock and it’s clean again. So nose wiper mitts have been used for a long time in cold climates. In front of you are mucklucks, trey're really nice to wear, they’re not tight fighting, so the blood flows nice and evenly round your feet, and keeps them warm. But they’re difficult to walk in, but you soon get used to it. You might, I used to leave them outside the tent. If they get full of snow, the snow is so dry you just shake it out of them, and put them on. I’ve brought you a driller’s jacket, this is what the drillers will wear in Antarctica, and there’s also a couple of hats for these fellas to try on. And on the floor is a pair of bib overalls, you might call them ski pants. And that’s the sort of gear that the drillers will use. Layers are really important, layers are important because you get….as soon as you start moving around and working you get too hot, the moment you stop you start cooling down, so layer upon layer, zip upon zip. When you go to Antarctica my advice is choose all your clothes with zips on them and you are much better off to have many layers rather than one big down jacket. But the trouble is you get sick of changing clothes. You put your parker on, you take it off, you put you gloves on, you take them off about every five minutes. You go from… you imagine in your school if you went from one building to the next, like from when you change subjects, change periods you end up with probably five minutes between each period just actually coping with changing clothes, so that you can go from one building to the other. I did try getting from one building to another one day and I nearly didnt make it, I learnt a lesson. You always must do the basics every single time.
