What makes a winning short story? Join Joy Cowley and Vita Bryant for a discussion to discover the secret to writing successfully. Since 1959, the Bank of New Zealand Katherine Mansfield Awards have helped boost the careers of celebrated New Zealand writers such as Maurice Shadbolt, Frank Sargeson and Daphne de Jong. This year, entries will be accepted from 1 May to 30 June. Secondary students are encouraged to enter a short story in the Young Writer category.

Joy is a noted author and 2005 competition judge, while Vita was the winner of the Young Writers’ Award the same year.

  1. Each secondary school that participates in the Katherine Mansfield Young Writer’s video conference on Tuesday, 23 May 2006 will go into prize draw to win a $250 dollars worth of Bookseller Tokens.
  2. The winning secondary school will be drawn on 30 May 2006.
  3. There will be one winning secondary school and entries are restricted to one per secondary school.
  4. The prize is not transferable or redeemable for cash.
  5. The prize draw supervisor’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  6. The winning secondary school will be notified by telephone or in writing.
  7. The winning school agrees that its name and photograph may be used by Bank of New Zealand from time to time for promotional purposes.
  8. Bank of New Zealand reserves the right to vary, suspend or terminate the prize draw at any time.

About the speakers

Joy Cowley.

Joy Cowley
Joy Cowley is one of New Zealand’s finest, most respected and prolific children’s authors. She has written more than 600 titles for all ages and her books are available in most countries where English is a first or second language. Her books are particularly sought after in the US, where she spends several months of the year. Several of her books have also been translated.


Vita Bryant.

Vita Bryant
Vita Bryant is in her first year at Victoria University. She won the Bank of New Zealand Katherine Mansfield Young Writers’ Award in her final year as a student of Onslow College. The story ‘Down and Out in Paris and Kensington Gardens’ was written for an English creative writing assessment, and is dedicated to her friends.
