Digital Chat with an Entomologist

NZ cicada.

As a child Jim Esson kept insects in his room, so it was a natural progression for him to become an entomologist. He is now retired but has remained a passionate and vocal advocate for science.

Jim was an entomologist with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in Nelson, studying how insects are classified (taxonomy), before moving to the Substation in Palmerston North where he became Officer in Charge. He specialised in economic entomology – how to control pests of pasture, crops and stored products. In 1981 he transferred to the Ministry of Agriculture and then went on to Hawkes Bay to do similar work.

Jim eventually returned to Palmerston North and finished working on the establishment unit for the Horticultural Crown Research Institute.

Since retiring he has continued his interest in entomology and has for some years been involved with a study of New Zealand Cicadas.

This discussion is suitable for primary and secondary students and covers the Science Curriculum strand Making Sense of The Living World, levels 1 to 5, Achievement objectives 2–4.

Join us for a digital chat with Jim Esson.

Find out about:

  • Taxonomy – the study of classifying living things
  • The impact insects have on our ecological system, and why it is important to study them
  • The wide variety of occupations available to scientists

This session will be suitable for primary through to secondary levels, with an emphasis on science and the Living World.
