On Friday 27 October between 11:00am–12:00pm, join our live videoconference with LEARNZ teacher Donald Reid to talk about The Antarctica Drilling Programme – ANDRILL. This is the most ambitious scientific drilling project ever undertaken on the edges of Antarctica.

ANDRILL: From Greenhouse to Icehouse

Donald Reid.

In November Donald will be going to Antarctica to find out about how this multinational drilling programme actually works. Although he has been to Antarctica several times before, this time he is taking over 50 classes of students with him on a virtual field trip.

Find out about:

  • How the rock core will be used to tell scientists about earth over millions of years
  • The effects of global warming
  • What the drilling programme will involve
  • What preparation is necessary for traveling and living on the ice.

Antarctica is a major driver of the world’s oceans and its atmosphere, yet how this happens is poorly understood. The ANDRILL drilling programme proposes to significantly improve this understanding by explaining the behaviour of Antarctic sea-ice, ice-shelves, glaciers and sea currents over the past 65 million years. This project will involve scientists from New Zealand, United States, United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany.

This videoconference is relevant for students at all levels of the curriculum from year 6 upwards.
