Te Ara: the Online Encyclopedia of New Zealand – Voyages to New Zealand
DATE: Wednesday 24 August
TIME: 11am–12pm
Join a video conference with Jock Phillips, general editor of Te Ara, the new online Encyclopaedia of New Zealand. This is an opportunity to have a discussion with one of New Zealand's leading historians to find out how information was gathered for Te Ara and what else is available in this collection.
In this videoconference, learn about the voyages of the first people to arrive in New Zealand.
Find out about:
- how the Maori journeyed here
- the legends of exploring waka
- how the legends compare to the historical evidence we have of migration to establish sustainable colonies
- the traditions associated with canoes
- how the early Maori successfully navigated them across the Pacific.
This conference will also cover the voyages to New Zealand of later settlers, who travelled 20,000 kilometres from Britain to find a new life for themselves.
Learn about:
- the settlers' motivations and the conditions they encountered onboard the ships
- the differences between the settlers who arrived on sailing ships and then steamers and aeroplanes.
