Dr Orange is a renowned historian. Her book, The Treaty of Waitangi (1987), has transformed national understanding of the importance of the Treaty. Her Illustrated History of the Waitangi Treaty was published last year. It tracks the changes in the 20th Century and especially in the last 25 years.

As general editor of the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, Dr Orange has contributed enormously to the shaping of national identity. She was also Acting Chief Historian at the Department of Internal Affairs from 1997 to 2000, and has worked on the online encyclopaedia of New Zealand for the Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

And now as Director History and Pacific Cultures Dr Orange is responsible for leading the research, curatorial, and collection management functions of Te Papa teams that take care of many of our national treasures.
