Māori Weaponry

On Tuesday 9 August 2005 between 1:30 and 2:30pm, join our videoconference with

Senior Programme Developer Erana Hemmingsen, and the Collection Manager for Māori artefacts at Te Papa, Dion Peita.

Join Erana Hemmingsen and Dion Peita to learn more about Te Papa's collection of Māori weaponry. This VC is suitable for both primary and secondary aged students and will be presented in English with additional discussion in Te Reo as appropriate.

Find out about:

  • How to care for Tāonga (treasures)
  • Different items identified as
  • View video footage of people from several different tribes talking about how and why particular weapon items are used
  • Weapons such as Taiaha, Kotiate, Patu, Toki and Poi
  • See a demonstration of basic poi movements practised prior to weapons use
  • Participate in a poi demonstration
