Hamish Campbell is a geologist who works at Te Papa and helped to develop the Awesome Forces exhibition. Join us in this discussion to learn more about tsunami.

Find out about:

  • what they are
  • what causes them

Tsunami are caused by rapid displacement of sea water. Hamish will discuss the major displacement mechanism including:

  • faulting (dislocation or offset) of the sea floor
  • collapse processes (landslides, submarine slides, volcano sector collapse)
  • volcanism (eruption)
  • meteorite impact
