Ever wonder why there is a zoo, how all the animals are looked after, what it would be like to work in a zoo? What a giraffe eats and how many kilograms of food it gets through in a day?
Join our special video conference with Wellington Zoo Trust educator Jim Maxim to learn all about conservation, what goes on behind the scenes, and the different jobs you can have at the zoo.
Learn about:
- The different animals that live at the zoo
- Daily life at the zoo – especially looking after and feeding dangerous animals
- Designing enriching enclosures
- The role zoos play in conservation
- Breeding programmes going on at the zoo
- Different careers at the zoo.
This is a great opportunity for students to ask questions to a zoo expert, and coincides with the screening of The Zoo programme on TV2.

About Wellington Zoo Trust
Wellington Zoo Trust is home to approximately 450 animals. Committed to conservation, Wellington Zoo Trust is developing three themes to promote and educate the public about the need for sustainable use of New Zealand's natural resources with a balance between humans and nature.
They believe that the most effective contribution they can make to conservation is to educate visitors about the challenges – predominantly caused by human intervention – facing the animals in the wild.
Wellington Zoo Trust has also recently started the "zookeeper for a day" programme to give people first-hand experience of what it's like to work in a zoo.
